Environmental Justice and Advocacy

Environmental justice. Environmental equity. Environmental racism. All three terms are used to describe the conviction that poor and minority communities suffer greater exposure to environmental pollution than other communities.

Greater Newark Conservancy believes that no group, regardless of race, color, or national origin should bear a disproportionate share of the burdens and realize few of the benefits of living near industrial facilities. Historically, these communities have lacked the power or opportunity to participate in environmental decisions affecting their communities. The Conservancy remedies that by raising awareness and empowering people to participate in activities that may affect their environment and health.

Recent endeavors have included hosting meetings about the Newark water crisis, climate change, and lead awareness programming.
