It’s practically a paradox: there are many vacant lots within the City of Newark’s boundaries, and yet there is also a lack of usable community open space. Instead of pleasant areas where community members can plant flowers and vegetables, have barbecues and parties, or simply relax and enjoy nature, we have abandoned, unmaintained lots.
The Conservancy’s Community Garden program aims to change this mind-boggling fact. We work closely with the City of Newark’s Adopt-A-Lot program. In this program residents can lease a city-owned lot for $1.00 per year. For a small fee, and based upon availability, the Conservancy provides technical assistance, materials such as soil and raised beds, seeds, and workshops.
